The government of Canada has introduced  regulations regarding the diet that is going to be a little bit different from the previous one. Unlike the previous diet regulation which insisted on the size or the amount recommend for the intake of certain foods, these new ones do not talk about the amount needed, it is all about trying as much as you can to avoid the named foods. These regulations mainly focus on consumption of the plant based foods and to cut away the meat, processed foods and some dairy products.

As a way of achieving food safety for Canadians, these new regulations will be restricting the consumption of certain foods like processed products which have been termed to have an effect to health causing diseases like hypertension, diabetes and cancer among others, these foods include; muffins, frozen pizza, hot dogs and soda among others.

The healthy products included in the regulations

These regulations have build up from the four categories of foods that were in the previous regulations where it has discouraged the use of some products and encouraged the use of the more healthy products, the products that are encourages are mainly more of plants and less of meat and dairy products. These products include

  • More vegetables and whole grains– the impression of the regulations is that Canadians should consume a half or their diet as vegetables and whole grains as one of the categories of the healthy food that has been recommended in the new regulations. The iconic picture of the new regulations shows a half of the meal to be vegetables and whole grains.
  • Proteins– not just any proteins, it is recommended that the proteins should be plant-based which has a low risk on human health. Some of the options are beans, nuts and tofu among other plant based products that will give you proteins.
  • Go for food with high unsaturated fat- these are highly recommended in the new regulations, some of these foods include; peanuts and avocado. What you should avoid is food with saturated fats like meat and cheese.
  • Drink water mostly-when it comes to fluids it is recommended theta one takes in water more than other fluids like flavored is not allowed and alcohol.
  • Cook for yourself– the regulations recommends that you cook your own food rather than taking processed foods.

Foods that are not recommended

There are those foods which were recommended in the previous regulations but limited in the amount taken, however these foods are not recommended at all in the new regulations. Here are examples of such foods;

  • Sugary and alcoholic beverages-these are not recommended anymore in the new regulations, although they are important producers of total sugars in the diet. Instead of these fluids, water is recommended as the main fluid.

  • Fruit juice– even if it was recommended in the previous regulations, the new guide does not recommend this, it is labeled as a sugary drink which may cause decay of teeth causing problems with dental health  and also causes diabetes type 2.
  • Alcohol consumption– people are warned against taking alcohol because it is said to have no nutrients yet contributing to more calories in the body. It is also linked with cancer and liver problems.

  • Processed foods-although there is an increase in the consumption of processed foods, they are not recommended in this guide, the food are believed to have a lot of salt and saturated fats which leads top complications like obesity, cancer and diabetes among other diseases.

Impacts of the new guidelines to the market

These regulations are going to have an impact on the market in both positive way and negative way. First, considering that there are small businesses which rely on selling such things, they will definitely be affected. However, it will open a market for exportation too. Some of the impacts include;

  • More exports– there will be more exports. The small businesses will be allowed to get a license that will enable them to make exports once they meet the requirements especially to the United States of America, as a result the business will play the international game which will see them develop more.
  • Limited importations– there will be quite limited importations especially for foods that have been discouraged in the guidelines; this means many businesses will face a big challenge; however these who will be preparing food for export will be licensed before they do so.
  • Dairy farmers will have a problem with market- now that milk products have been pushed aside, there will be a problem with milk market for dairy, and the exports only will not be able to cater for all their supplies.
  • Outlets for processed foods will face a challenge-because the processed foods are no longer recommended; there will be a significant cut down in the consumption hence affecting their market.

What about the edible and cannabis extracts?

There are only few forms of cannabis which are allowed in Canada, only a few are allowed, these include cannabis oil, fresh cannabis, dried cannabis, cannabis plant seed and cannabis plant. This is what is allowed currently, however, by October 17th, 2019 when the new regulations are going to take effect, edible cannabis, cannabis extracts and cannabis topicals will not be available for legal sale, this is because of the effects that these products might be having on people. Bubble Hash, Rosin, Shatter, THC & CBD cannabinoid Infused beverages and so much more!

To sum up this, the new diet regulations on Canada are going to take a slightly different approach from the previous ones; most products that were recommended to be taken in low amounts are now not recommended completely in these new guidelines. These may have both positive and negative impacts on the market and the small businesses that are involved; however it will be a win-win situation.
